About the Journal

Focus and Scope

Ameghiniana is a bimonthly peer-reviewed journal that publishes original contributions to all aspects of Paleontology, focusing on the paleontology of Gondwana and the Southern Hemisphere.

Articles include the following disciplines: Anatomy, Systematics, Phylogeny, Paleobiology, Paleoecology, Paleobiogeography, Biostratigraphy, and Taphonomy. Studies on stratigraphy, paleoenvironmental reconstructions, and extant material will also be included when the conclusions have paleontological implications.

Review papers are also considered if they are focused on topics relevant to the journal's scope. Please get in touch with a member of the Editorial Team if you are interested in submitting a Review Paper.

Manuscripts must deal with original work and not have been submitted to other publishing media. The Editorial Board will not consider manuscripts in which the subject matter does not meet relevance or interest standards. They should also be self-contained and NOT parts of a series (Part 1, Part 2, etc.).

Types of manuscripts

Ameghiniana publishes three types of manuscripts, which differ in their scope:

  • Articles: Research and review papers, either short or long, are welcome. All manuscripts will have to be submitted as articles. From June 2021, there will be a waiver of printing costs for articles up to 35 printed pages (= up to 35 printed pages in the final galley proof).
  • Obituary Notes: Please get in touch with the Editor-in-chief for details.
  • Book Reviews: Please contact the Editor-in-chief for details.
  • Comment/Reply: Please contact the Editor-in-chief for details.

Ameghiniana no longer publishes Nomenclatural Notes as a separate type of manuscript. Nomenclatural Notes should be sent to the Publicación Electrónica de la Asociación Paleontológica Argentina (PE-APA), which is an electronic-only open-access journal without any publication costs.

Editorial Review Process

Manuscripts will be subject to an initial revision of focus, format, and style by the Editor-in-chief according to the Ameghiniana Editorial Guidelines. Once the first revision is accomplished, a Scientific Editor is assigned based on its area of expertise. The assigned editor will invite at least two external peer-reviewers to evaluate the manuscript's scientific content.

Manuscripts will be rejected without editing if the Editorial Board considers that:
1. The subject matter lacks scientific relevance or interest, as the journal requires.
2. The Editorial Guidelines are not strictly met.
3. The manuscript has serious deficiencies in written English.

In the case of multi-authored papers, it is assumed that all the co-authors have endorsed its submission to Ameghiniana. All manuscripts will be sent to at least two reviewers, as determined exclusively by the Editorial Board.

Reviewed manuscripts requiring modifications by the author should be returned within three (3) months of notification by the Editorial Board. After this deadline, the system automatically withdraws the manuscript from the editorial process.
