UN NUEVO OCTODONTOIDEA (RODENTIA, CAVIOMORPHA) DEL OLIGOCENO TARDIO DE LA PROVINCIA DE CHUBUT (ARGENTINA).

Abstract

Se describe Gaimanomys alwinea gen. et sp. nov. sobre la base de un fragmento craneano con los 11 y p4 - M 3 de ambos lados. El resto fue hallado en la Formación Sarmiento, aflorante en las cercanías de Gairnan, en un nivel que suprayace a sedimentos con mamíferos del "Trelewense" e infrayace a niveles del "Patagoniano". Debido a su posición estratigráfica estos niveles son considerados como representando a la Edad - mamífero Colhuehuapense (Oligoceno tardío). Tentativamente, se asigna G. alwinea a la familia Echirnyidae, y probablemente representa una línea diferente de las sub familias reconocidas para el Terciario, caracterizada por la presencia de un p4 funcional y MI - M3 con morfología sigmoidea.
