Abstract

Ptemoconius tournoueri nov. sp. se reconoce en base a una hemimandíbula bastante bien preservada, con P2 incompleto y P3-M3 completos. Procede de la Gran Barranca al sur del lago Colhue Huapi; Miembro Colhue Huapi de la Formación Sarmiento (sensu Spalleti & Mazzoní, 1979). Se distingue de la especie tipo, P. polymorphoides Cifelli & Soria, 1983 por su mayor tamaño; P2 más robusto, con metacónido esbozado; paracónido más desarrollado en P3 y presente en P4; M1-3, con paralófído más desarrollado y M1 con hipoconúlído más reducido. Se hacen consideraciones sobre la evolución morfológica de la serie premolo-molar inferior de los Macraucheniidae del Olígoceno, los cuales representan la primera radiación evolutiva registrada para esta familia. Se convalida que el género Pternoconius representa al linaje más conservador de dicha radiación evolutiva.
