Abstract

This paper deals with the description of seven types of fossil zygospores referable to the family Zygnemataceae (Chlorophyta) recovered from the Cullen Formation (rniddle Tertiary) in the northeast of Tierra del Fuego. These are: Mougeotia sp. cf. M. laetivirens, Mougeotia sp., Spirogyra sp. Tipo A, S. sp. Tipo B, S. sp. Tipo C, Zygnema sp. Tipo A and Z? sp. Tipo B. This is the first report of a pre-Quatemary Zygnemataceae spore assemblage from the Southem Hemisphere. It is of interest regarding the diversity of types, the high representativity of such spores in the palynological samples and their value as palaeoecological indicators.
